India’s leading fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the T20 World Cup due to a back injury. India will play T20 World Cup without Bumrah.
The news of Bumrah’s injury first came out on 28 September. It was then said that this fast bowler could be out of the World Cup. However, then BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly and head coach Rahul Dravid denied the news of him being ruled out of the World Cup and said that he was simply ruled out of the series against South Africa.
But on Monday the board confirmed that he has been ruled out of the World Cup. The BCCI has taken this decision after consulting its medical team. Although the nature of Bumrah’s back injury has not been decided by the board, ESPNcricinfo understands that he has a back strain and could be out of action for at least six weeks.
Earlier, Bumrah did not play in the Asia Cup due to a back injury. However, he was selected for the T20I series against Australia and South Africa and also played the second and third T20Is against Australia. But after that his injury resurfaced and he was ruled out of the series against South Africa.
Ahead of the first T20 against South Africa, BCCI tweeted, “Bumrah has complained of back pain during practice. BCCI medical team will investigate his injury. He has been ruled out of the first T20.”
Actually, this back problem of Bumrah has been there for the last three years. It was first detected in September 2019 and the fast bowler was out of action for almost three months .
India have two reserve fast bowlers in the form of Mohammed Shami and Deepak Chahar for the T20 World Cup, with the board adding any one of them to the main squad. The BCCI can make this change itself by October 15, after which they will have to take permission from the technical group of the ICC.
Earlier, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was also ruled out of the T20 World Cup due to a knee injury . The Indian team is still waiting for the fitness assessment of Deepak Hooda , who is part of the 15-member World Cup squad. Hooda is also currently in NCA, Bangalore due to a back injury. The Indian contingent is to leave for Australia on 6 October.
